12/21/2023 0 Comments Toy story 2 to infinity and beyondThe prevailing view among toy manufacturers was that people don’t like the hard images of computer animation and would stay away from the picture in droves…A second factor was Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame. It sparked memories of Disney’s futurist 1982 adventure Tron, which ranks as one of the company’s biggest flops. Mattel has held the rights to classic Disney characters like Mickey Mouse since 1988 and the two companies are increasingly working together…But toy manufacturers were scared by the phrase “computer animation”. But the real Toy Story, and the tale of the Buzz Lightyear famine, is one of missed opportunities which has cost Disney and its largest toy supplier, Mattel, as much as 300m in unrealized sales – more than the film has grossed at the cinema – and left thousands of children heartbroken…Disney offered all its main toy suppliers the chance to pitch for the merchandising of Toy Story. A sensation which has led to parents offering up to 100 on the black market, four times the shop price, for a plastic Disney character which came to life in Toy Story but is virtually impossible to find in the high street…Originally it was believed that Disney, the company for which everything traditionally turns to gold, was limiting supply to generate the sort of tabloid hysteria that advertising cannot buy, as a prelude to swamping the market. As Marketing Week noted in “The Toy Fiasco that cost Disney 50 m.”, Right out of the gate, Buzz became an instant hit, but that Christmas there was an unexpected draught of Buzz Lightyear toys from a company known for their major marketing push for merchandise tie-ins to their movies. This cultural shift would be acted out on the silver screen in the form of Woody and his space ranger friend Buzz Lightyear. Along with pilots, “astronaut” quickly became the dream job of school children everywhere even replacing cowboys. This went beyond just film and television as the likes of Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, Jim Lovell and the other earl astronauts became not just household names but living legends. Meanwhile 1950s cinema would see films like The Forbidden Planet, and The Day the Earth Stood Still compete with Westerns and Biblical Epics and prove to be just as successful. Scientist Reed Richards would be joined by his girlfriend Sue Storm, best friend Ben Grimm and Sue’s brother Johnny on an outer space adventure that would lead them to become the Fantastic Four. Gone was Green Lantern Alan Scott’s origin inspired by the Aladdin legend and in his place was dashing test pilot Hal Jordan who would be inducted into an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. Things changed, however, with the Soviet launch of Sputnik and the race US race to the stars. Pulp magazines of the 1930’s and even science fiction auteur Isaac Asimov aboutĪ young space ranger named David Starr, better known as Lucky Starr, who wouldĮmbark on adventures across the soalr system. With the likes of Wells, Verne, and Shelley paving the way for others toįollow, Edgar Rice Burroughs envisioned a former Civil War soldier named JohnĬarter finding himself on the Red Planet and becoming that world’s champion andįlash Gordon and Buck Rogers dominated the Saturday Matinee serials and Space heroes have been a part of western fiction for almost two centuries.
